For three decades Anne-Sophie Mutter has been one of the greatest violin virtuosos of our time. Born in Rheinfelden in the state of Baden, the violinist launched her international career at the Lucerne Festival in 1976. A year later she performed as a soloist at the Salzburg Whitsun Concerts under the direction of Herbert von Karajan. Since then Anne-Sophie Mutter has performed concerts in all the major music centers. In addition to performing major traditional works, her repertoires continually break new ground with chamber music and orchestral works presented on equal terms. She also uses her popularity for charity projects and supports the development of young, exceptionally talented musicians.
In 2010 Anne-Sophie Mutter will be performing concerts in Asia, Europe and North America with focus on a variety of works such as Gubaidulina’s “In tempus praesens”, which she will perform for the first time in Japan, Canada and Russia. On a tour through the USA and Europe the violinist will perform Brahms Violin Concerto with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Manfred Honeck and with the London Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Ludovic Merlot. Anne-Sophie Mutter and will appear on stage together with Lambert Orkis in Japan and Taiwan for performances of the violin sonatas of Johannes Brahms. The two artists will also play works of Brahms, Debussy, Mendelssohn and Sarasate on their Recital Tour through Europe.
On another USA tour Anne-Sophie Mutter will perform Beethoven’s String Trios in a chamber music exclusive together with Yury Bashmet and Lynn Harrell.
Anne-Sophie Mutter will be the “Artist in Residence” at the 2010 Rheingau Music Festival where she will perform two concertos with the hr-Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Paavo Järvi. Also on the program are the Violin Concertos of Beethoven and Mendelssohn.
Anne-Sophie Mutter will also enjoy the status of “Artist in Residence” during the 2010/2011 New York concert season. Here she will treat her audiences to three different concert programs including two world premieres: In November she will combine Mozart’s Violin Concertos KV 207, 216 and 219 with a premiere performance of Wolfgang Rihm’s “Lichtes Spiel” – accompanied by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Michael Francis. In April 2011 listeners in New York will be able to enjoy Gubaidulina’s “In tempus praesens” for the first time, followed by a Beethoven Romance in conjunction with the world premiere of Sebastian Currier’s “Time Machines” in June 2011.
In addition to the major focal points of Anne-Sophie Mutter’s 2010 program, her performances will include the Violin Concertos of Beethoven, Dvorak and Mendelssohn, “Sur le même accord” from Henri Dutilleux and “Gesungene Zeit” by Wolfgang Rihm accompanied by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Kirov Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theater St. Petersburg, Orquesta de Cámara Andrés Segovia, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic. Her partners at the conductor’s podium: Pablo Gonzáles, Valéry Gergiev, Riccardo Chailly, Riccardo Muti and Kent Nagano.
The honors afforded Anne-Sophie Mutter for her many recordings include the German Record Prize, the Record Academy Prize, the Grand Prix du Disque, the International Record Prize and several Grammies. On the occasion of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 250th birthday Anne-Sophie Mutter recorded all of Mozart's major compositions for violin on the Deutsche Grammophon label. These are available on both CD and DVD. Anne-Sophie Mutter's recording of Gubaidulina's Violin Concerto "In tempus praesens" together with the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Valéry Gergiew as well as her recording of Bach's Violin Concerto in A minor and E major performed together with the Trondheim Soloists under the direction of the violinist herself were released in September. To mark the Bicentenary of Mendelssohn’s birth, Anne-Sophie Mutter is honoring the composer with a very personal tribute combining symphonic music and chamber works on CD and DVD: The Violin Sonata in F major of 1838, the Piano Trio in D minor op. 49 that was composed in 1839 and the Violin Concerto in E minor of 1845.
Anne-Sophie Mutter’s recording of Brahms’ Violin Sonatas performed together with Lambert Orkis has been released in March 2010 on the Deutsche Grammophon label.
The artist takes special pride in performing contemporary compositions for violin. Sebastian Currier, Henri Dutilleux, Sofia Gubaidulina, Witold Lutoslawski, Norbert Moret, Krzysztof Penderecki, Sir André Previn and Wolfgang Rihm have all dedicated works to her. Further premiere performances of the chamber orchestra works of Penderecki and Rihm are currently being planned.
In 2008 the artist established the "Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation." The objective of the foundation is to further increase worldwide support for promising young musicians - a task which the violinist took on when she founded the "The Anne-Sophie Mutter Circle of Friends Foundation" in 1997. Anne-Sophie Mutter also takes a special interest in the medical and social problems of our time. She regularly lends her support to these causes through charitable concerts. For example, in 2010 she will be performing for the “Maison de Solenn”, “Save the Children”, “Fondation Dr Henri Dubois-Ferrière Dinu Lipatti” and the “State Academy of Music in Karlsruhe”.
Anne-Sophie Mutter received in 2008 the International Ernst von Siemens Music Prize as well as the Leipzig Mendelssohn Prize. In 2009 she was awarded the European St. Ulrich’s Prize and the Cristobal Gabaroon Award. She is a bearer of the Grand Order of Merit of the German Federal Republic, the French Order of the Legion of Honor, the Bavarian Order of Merit, the Great Austrian Order of Merit, and many other awards.
