 Roman Patkoló, double-bass
Roman Patkoló was born on 6th February 1982 in Zilina in Slovakia. He took up the double bass only at the age of 13, receiving his first lessons in his home town. His exceptional musical talent became obvious to all two years later when he won 1st Prize in the National Slovakian Competition.
Numerous further distinctions have since followed, including the Prize of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in 1998. In 1999 he comfortably won 1st Prize in the International Double Bass Competition (in the under-18 category) in Iowa, USA. In 2000 he was awarded 1st Prize in the "Johannes Matthias Sperger" International Music Competition, the world's biggest competition for the double bass. In 2002, Roman Patkoló was awarded the European Culture Prize for Young Artists by German President Johannes Rau in Berlin. Together with the international double bass quartet Bassiona Amorosa, he was awarded the European Quartet Prize in 2003. In the same year, he also came 2nd in the International Music Competition of the ARD (German public broadcasting corporation). In March 2006, he was awarded the Glenn Gould International Protégé Prize in Toronto, Canada on Sir André Previn's recommendation.
He started attending the School of Music in Munich under Professor Klaus Trumpf in 1997, completing his studies with his Master Class Diploma in 2005.
In 1999, Roman Patkoló applied for a scholarship from the Freundeskreis der Anne-Sophie Mutter Stiftung e.V. Anne-Sophie Mutter immediately recognized his exceptional musical talent and has since enthusiastically nurtured it. In addition, the Freundeskreis der Anne-Sophie Mutter Stiftung e.V. has broadened the slim original repertoire for the double bass by awarding composition commissions, such as those to Sebastian Currier, Krzysztof Penderecki, Sir André Previn and Wolfgang Rihm.
Sir André Previn's Concerto for Violin, Double Bass and Orchestra, commissioned by the Freundeskreis der Anne-Sophie Mutter Stiftung e.V., received its first performance by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Boston on 19th April 2007 under the composer's baton with Anne-Sophie Mutter and Roman Patkoló as the soloists.
Roman Patkoló has performed as a soloist in Indianapolis, Luzern, Basel, St. Petersburg and Moscow, for instance, and has played with the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra in Heilbronn, the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra and the Munich Chamber Orchestra. With the unusual line-up of the Bassiona Amorosa double bass quartet, he has achieved huge success worldwide.
Roman Patkoló has been deputy solo double-bassist at the Opera House in Zurich since February 2005. He started teaching at the School of Music in Munich in 2006, where has held a professorship since 2007.
