Anne-Sophie Mutter is one of the most popular and successful violinists of our era. In its statement, the jury described her as the ‘queen of the violin’ and singled out her passion and her courage as a musical ‘storyteller’. These qualities are evident in Anne-Sophie Mutter’s new album, Across the Stars, on which she, together with the five-time Oscar winner, composer and conductor John Williams, revisits and reinterprets some of his greatest ever film scores.
Founded by ABBA manager Stig Andersson through an endowment to the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, the Polar Music Prize has been awarded annually since 1992. A jury is responsible for selecting the winner. The list of previous recipients is awash with global stars, including Bob Dylan, Elton John, Keith Jarrett, Metallica, Paul McCartney, Sting, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Pierre Boulez.
Frank Briegmann, CEO & President UNIVERSAL MUSIC Central Europe and Deutsche Grammophon, said in his speech: “Anne-Sophie Mutter isn’t just one of the most gifted violinists of our time; she’s also one of the boldest artists on the classical music scene. She continuously strives to achieve more and is always open to new ideas – the more daring, the better. She puts her all into every performance and every work. Everyone at Deutsche Grammophon and Universal Music is proud and delighted to have supported Anne-Sophie Mutter since the very start of her career – and we are devoted to supporting her for a long time to come. Congratulations on winning the Polar Music Prize, Anne-Sophie Mutter!”
