Hwayoon Lee<\/h2>\n

Serving as a bridge between art and people, between worlds and generations, Hwayoon Lee has established herself as one of the preeminent violists of her generation through her warm charisma, profound resonance, and natural stage presence. <\/p>\n

The narrative breath of Pansori\u2014the traditional Korean vocal art she internalized from the age of three\u2014forms the foundation of her distinctive musical vocabulary. Following early studies with Sang-Jin Kim and Rainer Moog, she completed advanced studies at the Kronberg Academy under Nobuko Imai and earned her Konzertexamen at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) under Hartmut Rohde.
Supported by a close mentorship with Anne-Sophie Mutter since 2011, she has performed on major international stages as principal violist and soloist with Mutter\u2019s Virtuosi. A de\ufb01nitive milestone in her artistic path was performing Mozart\u2019s Sinfonia Concertante alongside Anne-Sophie Mutter with the Bamberg Symphony conducted by Manfred Honeck.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

As a soloist, Lee has collaborated with renowned orchestras including the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSB) and the Stuttgart Philharmonic, and receives regular invitations to leading festivals such as the Lucerne Festival and Marlboro Music Festival. Her contributions to cultural diplomacy encompass performances at the UN Headquarters in New York and the of\ufb01cial PyeongChang Gala Concert at the Vienna Musikverein. <\/p>\n

In contemporary music and interdisciplinary collaborations, she has carved out a unique path: she led the world premiere of Shin-uh Lee\u2019s viola concerto Earth Poemas well as the European premiere of Moon Jar Poem. Originating with the recording of Red Cliff, she conceived projects dismantling the boundaries between music and visual arts, staged at institutions such as the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Leeum Museum in Seoul. She is currently immersed in the project for Yie-eun Chun\u2019s string quartet Kinderszenen, a commissioned work by the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation.<\/p>\n

Her discography features recordings on Deutsche Grammophon\u2014including Schubert\u2019s Trout Quintet with Anne-Sophie Mutter and Daniil Trifonov, alongside Andr\u00e9 Previn\u2019s Nonet\u2014as well as a solo album in the KBS “Young Korean Artists” series. She was awarded First Prize at the International Johannes Brahms Competition and the \ufb01rst-ever Grand Prix in the history of the Yuri Bashmet International Viola Competition.<\/p>\n

Giving back for the holistic mentorship she received, she draws upon an international outlook to foster the next generation and share classical music through regular masterclasses at her alma maters (Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School) and via digital platforms. Since August 2023, Hwayoon Lee performs on the 1865 “Cheremetev” viola by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume and a Benoit Rolland bow, on generous loan from the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation.<\/p>\n

Hwayoon Lee<\/h2>

Technische Virtuosit\u00e4t machte Hwayoon Lee (*1996) schon als Kind in Korea auf der Bratsche gro\u00dfen Spa\u00df, doch dass sie schon mit neun Jahren mit ihrem Lehrer Sang-Jin Kim in Seoul \u00f6ffentlich Kammermusik spielte, ist vor allem auch auf ihre starke B\u00fchnenpr\u00e4senz und k\u00fcnstlerische Sensibilit\u00e4t zur\u00fcckzuf\u00fchren. Hwayoon Lee kontaktierte Anne-Sophie Mutter im Jahr 2011 in einem Brief, der zu einer der entscheidenden musikalischen Begegnungen ihres Lebens f\u00fchren sollte. Mutter und ihre Stiftung erm\u00f6glichten der jungen Bratschistin wichtige musikalische Impulse und Erkenntnisse, u.a. bei Studienreisen nach Wien und Bonn. Die Stiftung erm\u00f6glichte Hwayoon Lee nach Abschluss ihres Studiums in Seoul ein Aufbaustudium an der Kronberg Akademie bei Nobuko Imai (2017 \u2013 2019) und das Konzertexamen bei Hartmut Rohde (2019-2023) an der Universit\u00e4t der K\u00fcnste in Berlin. Zahlreiche Preise weisen darauf hin, dass ihr Weg unter den BratschistInnen unserer Zeit ein ganz besonderer ist.<\/p>

Seit 2012 ist Hwayoon Lee Mitglied des Solisten-Ensembles Mutter\u2019s Virtuosi von Anne-Sophie Mutter. Mit diesem Ensemble unternahm sie zahlreiche Tourneen. Die j\u00fcngste Tournee f\u00fchrte sie mit Mutter\u2019s Virtuosi im Januar 2023 von Island \u00fcber Kanada in die USA sowie im Sommer 2023 in zahlreiche europ\u00e4ische St\u00e4dte. Gemeinsam mit Anne-Sophie Mutter nahm sie 2017 das \u201eForellenquintett\u201c von Schubert auf. 2026 wird sie die \u201eKinderszenen\u201c von Yie-eun Chun, ein Auftragswerk der Anne-Sophie Mutter Stiftung, urauff\u00fchren.<\/p>

Hwayoon Lee arbeitet regelm\u00e4\u00dfig als Solistin mit Orchestern zusammen, so bereits 2014 mit den Bamberger Symphonikern unter Manfred Honeck (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozarts \u201eSinfonia Concertante\u201c). 2023 hat Hwayoon Lee mit dem Nationalorchester Koreas das Bratschenkonzert \u201eEarth Poem\u201c (2023) von Shin-uh Lee im Nationaltheater Koreas aufgef\u00fchrt (Aufzeichnung durch Arte TV Korea). Mit der gleichen Komponistin hatte sie im Dezember 2022 eine Englandtournee mit dem Werk \u201eMoon Jar Poem\u201c unternommen, u.a. zum Jubil\u00e4um der British-Koreanischen Freundschaft in London im Rahmen des Loewe Craft Prize. Im Oktober 2023 spielte sie mit Anne-Sophie Mutter im Schloss Nymphenburg zum Geburtstag des Herzogs Franz von Bayern; im November 2023 trat sie im Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam auf und gab in der Liederhalle Stuttgart mit dem Pianisten Thomas Hoppe ein privates Rezital. 2023 trat sie ferner beim Seoul Spring Festival, dem Kronberg Academy Festival und dem Crescendo Festival der UdK Berlin auf.<\/p>

Zum Seoul Spring Festival kehrt sie auch 2024 zur\u00fcck; ferner tritt sie beim Musik Festival Radebeul und in Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart auf. Im Juni 2024 wird Hwayoon Lee mit dem UdK Orchester unter der Leitung von Hartmut Rohde Alfred Schnittkes \u201eMonolog\u201c f\u00fcr Viola und Streichensemble auff\u00fchren.<\/p>

Seit August 2023 stellt die Anne-Sophie Mutter Stiftung Hwayoon Lee die ber\u00fchmte \u201eCheremetev\u201c-Bratsche zur Verf\u00fcgung. Diese wurde 1865 in der Pariser Werkstatt von Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume gebaut. Hwayoon Lee spielt einen Bogen von Benoit Rolland, ebenfalls eine Leihgabe der Anne-Sophie Mutter Stiftung.<\/p>
