Lionel Martin is a prizewinner of the Budapest International Cello Competition (2025).
Other awards include the Suggia Award (Porto, 2024) and First Prize at the Ton & Erkl\u00e4rung Competition (Hannover, 2022).<\/p>\n

Since 2017, he has been a scholarship holder of the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation and regularly performs with the violinist in major concert halls such as the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Berlin Philharmonie, Wiener Musikverein, KKL Luzern, Teatro Col\u00f3n, and Carnegie Hall. His chamber music partners include, among others, Lambert Orkis, Lauma Skride, Martin Klett, Sebastian Manz, and Franziska H\u00f6lscher.<\/p>\n

As a soloist, he has appeared with leading orchestras, including the NDR Radiophilharmonie, ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, SWR Symphony Orchestra, Gu\u0308rzenich Orchestra, and the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra.<\/p>\n

Recitals have taken him to the Tonhalle Zu\u0308rich, Lucerne Festival, Oberstdorfer Musiksommer, and Beethovenfest Bonn. He regularly performs with his brother, pianist Demian Martin. Their concerts have been broadcast by BR, hr, SWR, WDR, and ARTE; special attention has been drawn to the duo\u2019s ability to improvise together at the audience\u2019s request.<\/p>\n

In 2021, Lionel Martin was selected for the SWR2 New Talent program, leading to numerous interviews, recordings, and concerts. His performances are broadcast internationally, and he was featured by the EBU in their Top Young Performersseries. His debut CD with John Tavener\u2019s Cello Concerto The Protecting Veil and Svyati was released in 2023 by SWR Music. In 2024, a second CD featuring Kabalevsky\u2019s Second Cello Concerto, recorded with the SWR Symphony Orchestra, followed.<\/p>\n

Lionel Martin began cello studies at the age of five at the Tu\u0308bingen Music School with Joseph Hasten, who taught him for twelve years. From 2020 to 2024, he studied with Thomas Grossenbacher at the Zurich University of the Arts; since 2024, he has continued his studies with Frans Helmerson at the Kronberg Academy. He has also received important artistic guidance from Lynn Harrell, Martti Rousi, Jens Peter Maintz, Jan Vogler, and Yo-Yo Ma.<\/p>\n

Lionel Martin wurde 2003 in Filderstadt (DE) geboren und verbrachte seine ersten beiden Lebensjahre in Perth, Australien. Im Alter von 5 Jahren begann er mit dem Cellospiel an der T\u00fcbinger Musikschule bei Joseph Hasten, der ihn noch heute unterrichtet. Seit 2018 erh\u00e4lt er zus\u00e4tzlich Unterricht bei Thomas Grossenbacher in Z\u00fcrich.<\/p>

Bei vielfacher Teilnahme bei \"Jugend Musiziert\" erzielte er zahlreiche erste Bundespreise, mit der H\u00f6chstpunktzahl in der Kategorie Violoncello solo. Dar\u00fcber hinaus erhielt er Sonderpreise u.a. der J\u00fcrgen Ponto Stiftung, der Deutschen Stiftung Musikleben und der Bechstein- Stiftung. Neben seinen solistischen T\u00e4tigkeiten gilt seine besondere Liebe der Kammermusik. In vielf\u00e4ltigen Besetzungen tritt er in ganz Europa auf und ist f\u00fchrendes Mitglied des Celloensembles \u00b112Vc. Im Oktober 2017 f\u00fchrte ihn das Celloensemble der Deutschen Stiftung Musikleben in den gro\u00dfen Saal der Elbphilharmonie.<\/p>

Nach einigen Auftritten mit dem Haydn C-Dur Cellokonzert deb\u00fctierte Lionel Martin 2017 mit den Rokoko-Variationen von Tschaikowsky in der Liederhalle mit den Stuttgarter Philharmonikern unter der Leitung von Dan Ettinger.<\/p>

Es folgten weitere solistische Auftritte mit den Heidelberger Sinfonikern im Rokokotheater Schwetzingen (2017), dem Klaipeda Chamber Orchestra in Litauen, dem Stuttgarter Kammerorchester beim Oberstdorfer Musiksommer 2018, dem Jugendsinfonieorchester T\u00fcbingen mit dem Cellokonzert von Antonin Dvorak sowie dem Elgar Cello-Konzert und dem L\u00fcneburger Bachorchester (2018).<\/p>

Im September 2018 trat Lionel Martin mit einem Rezital beim \u201eLucerne Festival\u201c auf und im Juni 2019 brachte er das Cello Konzert von Saint-Saens zur Auff\u00fchrung im Rahmen einer Tournee nach Japan mit dem Youth Chamber Orchestra Stuttgart.<\/p>

F\u00fcr 2019 wurde Lionel f\u00fcr den \u201ePrix Young Artist of the Year\u201c beim Festival der Nationen in Bad W\u00f6rishofen nominiert, bei dem er mit dem Festivalorchester die Rokoko-Variationen von Tschaikowsky aufgef\u00fchrt hat.<\/p>

Im Oktober 2019 war er mit \u201eMutter\u2019s Virtuosi auf Tournee in S\u00fcdamerika.<\/p>

Er erhielt wichtige Anregungen von Martti Rousi, Jen-Peter Maintz, Jan Vogler, Lynn Harrell sowie Yo-Yo Ma.<\/p>

Seit Februar 2017 ist Lionel Stipendiat der Anne-Sophie Mutter Stiftung.<\/p>
